History of Sun Life

Sun Life was founded more than 150 years ago by a group of Montréal-based business leaders as the Sun Insurance Company of Montréal. However, due to the political and economic climate at that time, it wasn’t until six years later that the company began its operations. In 1871, the firm started selling life insurance in Toronto and eventually issued its first policy mid-year.

Since then, Sun Life has played a significant role in providing clients with financial protection in the face of major global events, including World Wars and economic crises. The company's journey through the Spanish Flu, the Great Depression, and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic, has showcased its commitment to serving clients and communities. As such, Sun Life has positioned itself as a trusted name in the insurance sector.
