CVN, Bayer award fellowship for cardiovascular research

The Canadian Vascular Network and Bayer have awarded a joint fellowship to two Canadian doctors for research into pulmonary hypertension

The Canadian Vascular Network and Bayer have announced that they have awarded a partnered research fellowship to two Canadian doctors to study pulmonary hypertension. The CVN is a multi-disciplinary group of researchers focused on breaking down barriers between disciplines in the study and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

The fellowship was awarded to Dr. Jason Weatherald of the University of Calgary and Dr. Don Thiwanka  Dilshan Wijeratne of Queen’s University, according to a news release.

“Bayer is an organization driven by our mission, Science for a Better Life, and the research fellowship is another shining example of how we put this mission into practice,” said Dr. Shurjeel Choudhri, Bayer senior vice president and head of medical and scientific affairs. “We know that supporting future researchers and scientists in the area of pulmonary hypertension will fuel innovation, improving the lives of Canadians.”

On behalf of the CVN, we are thrilled that this year we were able to support two outstanding young investigatiors,” said Dr. Duncan Stewart, CVN scientific director. “This is an exciting time for PH research and we look forward to working with the 2016 Fellows.”

Weatherald serves as a respirologist for Alberta Health Services and a clinical assistant professor at the University of Calgary. Wijeratne is an RCPSC specialist and assistant professor at Queen’s University.
