Dentists said to have concocted scheme worth $200,000
It was just over a week ago that we told you about the case of a “horror dentist” (see “Horror” Dentist goes on trial) and now some more oral surgeons have hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
This time it is the turn of two men who worked within the dentistry department of Mount Sinai Hospital, based in Toronto. The duo has been charged with committing insurance fraud to the value of $200,000.
The two men in question, who are no longer practicing at the hospital, are Dr Cameron Clokie and Dr George Sandor. It is alleged by Ontario Provincial Police that the two men were actually billing Ontario Health Insurance for their role in surgeries that they were not actually part of. Indeed they also are alleged to have made insurance billings on their surgeries.
Sandor had actually moved to Finland, where he was arrested back in January, before being brought back to Canada. He is facing three charges of fraud in excess of $5,000. Meanwhile, Clokie is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000 and was arrested earlier this month. The totals alleged to have been pocketed by the two men are substantial – Sandor is said to have gained more than $68,000 from the fraud scheme, while Clokie is alleged to have made $139,000.
Both men have been released on bail with Clokie to appear in court on March 21 and Sandor on March 31. In addition, Clokie faces a hearing at the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario in May on allegations of sexual abuse towards a patient.
