Insurer responsibilities are once again in the spotlight after a man was charged with the murder of his father after taking life insurance out in his name.
Just days after making a heartfelt public plea to find his father’s killers, Michael Martin Jr. was arrested and charged with Michael Anthony Martin’s murder.
In a plot a detective described as “like a movie (or a) a murder novel,” Martin Jr. allegedly took out multiple life insurance policies worth millions of dollars in his father’s name just weeks before he was killed.
Police haven’t said what role father and son having the same names played in the alleged murder.
Sitting in the dock, he shook with emotion, crying, during his court appearance. He didn’t look away from his family who mouthed ‘I love you’ to him.
He did not apply for bail and the case was adjourned to May 5.
The 25-year-old had told the media of his horror when on June 13 of last year he was bound and gagged while he was forced to listen to his father die during the gruesome attack.
Now, he is behind bars, accused of taking out several insurance policies on his father’s life before killing him.
“We will allege Martin Jr is responsible for the organisation of the life insurance and that financial gain was one of the motivating factors for the murder,” Detective Inspector Grant Taylor from the Homicide Squad said to the Daily Telegraph.
Martin Sr was killed less than 24 hours he had returned home after several weeks in hospital, where he had been recovering from a previous attack.
According to police, a woman had been paid to kill Martin Sr during a home invasion with two accomplices in April last year. It left the 46-year-old with a wound through his eye and serious head injuries. She was arrested and charged in February with attempted murder.
Police are investigating the relationship between the father and son, but believe Martin Jr had little to do with his dad following years of abuse.
They are also exploring Martin Jr was assisted with the alleged murder.
