Advisor remembered for charity work, client service after sudden passing

Fraser Sutherland, Senior Investment Advisor and Senior Portfolio Manager, of the Sutherland Investment Group of CG Wealth Management passed away unexpectedly at his home in Ottawa on Friday January 17th .

Sutherland was a veteran advisor having worked with CIBC Wood Gundy in Ottawa for over 20 years, building a practice managing over $1 billion in assets. He had recently joined Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management’s new office on Ottawa.

“Fraser, the founder of the Sutherland Investment Group, was widely admired in the wealth management industry for his compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his clients and team. He represented our industry in a way that made us all proud, combining professionalism with genuine care and integrity,” write Stuart Raftus, CEO of Canaccord Genuity Corp. in a LinkedIn post announcing Sutherland’s passing.

Raftus and others praised Sutherland’s dedication to his community, noting his commitment to numerous charitable organizations including the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, Ottawa Sting Minor Hockey Association, the National Capital YMCW/YWCA, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, and the Ottawa Boys and Girls Club.

Wealth Professional profiled Sutherland’s move to CG in November of 2024, and he explained the move in the context of an intention to care for his clients. He noted in the interview a deep commitment to client service as well as commitment to charitable causes in and around his community.

“Fraser possessed a rare combination of talent, intelligence, and unwavering dedication, which allowed him to cultivate a network built on mutual respect and trust. He was more than an investment advisor; he was a trusted partner, finding solutions and consistently adding value for his clients, whom he considered family,” his obituary reads.

Sutherland is survived by his wife and three children.
