Seattle based Amazon are being accused of ‘bullying’ tactics by publishers in the UK. They are unhappy at Amazon’s new terms and conditions which they say are destroying the publishing industry. One issue is the ‘print on demand’ clause which gives Amazon the rights to print books themselves if publishers have not provided enough stock, while another term preventing publishers offering discounts to other suppliers without offering the deal to Amazon. The clause could mean that publishers could not even sell books at a discount on their own websites. There been suggestions that elements of the new contract would breach UK or EU competition laws and may be referred to regulators. Read the full story.
