Investment vehicle poised for more global growth
By the end of 2023, assets invested in the global ETFs industry were forecasted to reach a new milestone of over US$11.5. trillion, beating the previous record of $10.99 trillion at the end of Nov 2023, according to research by ETFGI.
Assets were forecasted to have increased by over 24% during 2023, going from $9.26 trillion at end of 2022 to over $11.5 trillion at the end of 2023. Meanwhile, net inflows for 2023 were forecasted to be over $938 billion, which is the second highest on record, after net inflows of $1.29 trillion in 2021.
In December, net inflows were forecasted to be over $176 Billion, with December often being one of the strongest months for ETF issuers, especially in the US. Financial markets reacted positively to the Fed’s announcement on Nov 1st that it would hold interest rates steady and indicated that rates would be cut in 2024.
As of December 28, 2023, the S&P 500 index is up 26.64% year-to-date, the Developed markets ex US index is up 18.36% year-to-date, the Emerging Markets index is up 10.66% year-to-date, and the Frontier markets index is up 30.36% year-to-date, according to Deborah Fuhr, managing partner, founder, and owner of ETFGI,
In comparison to other regions, the ETF industry in the US saw the largest number of assets invested, reaching a new milestone of over $8.1 trillion. However, the ETFs industries in Europe, Asia Pacific excluding Japan and Canada also reached new milestones of over $1.8 trillion, $1.1 trillion and $311 billion, respectively, according to the press release.
