One-time Vancouver Opera Chairman takes out top job at financial services provider as the current boss bows out after nearly 10 years at the top.
Alex Besharat, a one-time Vancouver Opera chairman, has been appointed managing director and head of ScotiaMcLeod Full Service Brokerage, effective January 1, 2014, replacing Hamish Angus who will be retiring at year-end 2013, a Scotiabank spokeswoman confirmed.
Besharat had been director and the western regional manager for the brokerage based out of Vancouver, a role that was also held by Angus prior to his ascent to the top role.
Angus joined ScotiaMcLeod in 1986 as an investment executive in Vancouver. Prior to his appointment to the Toronto-based lead role, he was managing director and western regional manager.
Angus’ retirement is part of a major, but well-plotted, shakeup of senior roles at Scotiabank. Chief executive Rich Waugh announced earlier this year that he will step down as CEO on November 1, after a decade running the bank. He will be replaced by Brian Porter, the bank’s current president and former head of international banking.
