Advocis Symposium 2023: Kelly Gustafson and Robert McCullagh reveal insights on the event where regulators and advisors converge.
The Advocis Symposium is not just another conference; it is a pivotal platform that provides clarity on the impact of regulations on financial advice and clients. The company celebrates the 15th anniversary of the Advocis Symposium event. Over the past decade and a half, this conference has been an industry staple, cementing its place as the premier event in this niche.
Master of Ceremonies this year, industry influencer, Kelly Gustafson, Director at Large on Advocis’ National TFAAC Board of Directors says, “This year, I am honored to step into the shoes of our previous emcee, Robert McCullagh, and bring a different perspective as the first female host of this prestigious event. My aim is to uphold the Symposium's legacy while infusing a new energy into the proceedings.”
The lineup of speakers, including industry experts such as Andrew Kriegler, and Ellen Bessner, promising to shed light on the innovations and challenges facing the sector. Their insights will not only guide attendees in navigating the complexities of the financial landscape but also reignite their passion for the profound impact advisors can have on people's lives.
Gustafson says, “To kick off the show, we'll have our interim CEO, Harris, deliver a State of the Union address to openly discuss some of the challenges our organization has faced. This is especially pertinent given that we are a mature organization operating in an industry that is also experiencing some adversity.
“As for myself, I bring a unique and valuable perspective to the conversation. With a background in technology and experience as both an advisor and a wholesaler, I understand the complexities of innovation in distribution channels. This will inform our discussion on the transformative changes we are implementing to ensure our organization is future-focused and able to support our members effectively.”
One of the most valuable aspects of the Symposium is the opportunity to humanize the regulatory process. Seeing financial advisors meet face-to-face with regulators, serves as a vital bridge, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. It allows all groups in attendance to build a shared understanding and work collaboratively towards the common goal of serving clients’ best interests.
Jim Ruta's session, titled "The New Professionalism: It May Not Be What You Think," is one that should not be missed. A renowned figure in the industry, particularly on the insurance side, Ruta is known for his dynamic and passionate speaking style that truly resonates with audiences.
“In an industry where it can sometimes feel isolating, Jim serves as a reminder of the meaningful work we do. His insights, drawn from a deep and extensive tenure in the industry, are invaluable and sure to leave a lasting impression,” Gustafson says.
The various panels and sessions, such as the Smooth Operator Panel and the Non-Solis Nobis Segment, are designed to address the most pressing issues facing our industry, from the future of AI and machine learning to the importance of advocacy and community support. These discussions are not just theoretical; they provide practical takeaways that can be applied directly to advisor businesses.
Robert McCullagh has been an integral part of Symposiums over the years, serving as the Master of Ceremonies for the past 10 years. McCullagh expresses that he will miss the role as it provided him with an excellent opportunity to engage at a different level with the regulators and have meaningful conversations with speakers.
“The brilliance of this event has always been its ability to serve as a unique forum where regulators from all areas converge with the inclusion of advisors in the dialogue. This platform facilitates a valuable exchange, allowing us to engage with and grasp the objectives that regulators aim to achieve,” comments McCullagh.
The Symposium is an excellent networking opportunity. The reception, following the panels, offers a chance to connect with speakers and fellow attendees, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations.
Looking back on the early days of the event to today, McCullagh says, “When we launched the Symposium, there were some initial challenges and uncertainties—we were navigating uncharted territory and still figuring out the best approach. It was a little clunky!
“Fast forward to today where it has evolved to become an eagerly anticipated annual discussion of thought leadership and insights. This milestone 15th year is a testament to the lasting impact and value of this event.”
