Former TD managing director joins investment banking leadership team
Barclays has announced a new head of M&A for its investment banking business in Canada as the FI reaffirms its commitment to operating in the Canadian market.
The UK-headquartered banking group has hired former TD Securities managing director of M&A, Stephen Stewart, who will be based in Toronto and report to Ryan Voegeli, head of Investment Banking for Canada, who joined the bank in January from CIBC, and Dan Grabos, head of Americas M&A.
“This hire is further evidence of our unwavering commitment to Canada, and the addition of Stephen to the team will help us to further build upon our strong momentum,” said Geoffrey Belsher, chairman and country CEO for Canada. “We are the leading bulge bracket firm in Canada and are committed to continuing to invest in our platform to enable us to deliver for our Canadian clients and to bring Canada to the world.”
Stewart joined TD in 2008 and was involved in many high-profile transactions including advising Thomson Reuters on both the sale of a 55% majority stake in its Financial & Risk business to Blackstone and the US$27bn sale of Refinitiv to the London Stock Exchange, as well as George Weston’s on the spin-out of Choice Properties from Loblaw and Choice Properties on the $6bn acquisition of Canadian Real Estate Investment Trust.
“Stephen’s extensive experience and proven track-record of delivery of standout solutions will be a driving force for our business in Canada,” said Voegeli. “His expertise across key sectors and his leadership capabilities will be of significant value to our clients and to Barclays.”
Barclays has also recently hired Jeff Lau as a director.
