Dow sets another record, world markets mostly positive
The Toronto Stock Exchange may have been closed Monday but world markets were buzzing with talk of US jobs data, earnings and North Korea.

Wall Street closed higher with the Dow setting its ninth consecutive record close. European markets were mostly higher at the end of the session but Germany’s DAX was lower following weak data. Asia’s major markets closed higher.

Commodities remained mixed with oil and gold prices lower while copper and palladium were among the stronger metals.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was closed.
The Dow Jones closed up 25.61 (0.12%)
Oil is trending lower (Brent $52.24, WTI $49.31 at 4.45pm)
Gold is trending lower (1263.30 at 4.45pm)
The loonie is valued at U$0.7886

Lumber dispute could be resolved says Freeland
Canada’s foreign affairs minister said Monday that she believes that the dispute with the US over lumber exports is achievable and outlines of a deal are in place, but the timescale is still uncertain.

Chrystia Freeland told CTV News that the matter not be resolved before NAFTA talks are due to begin next week.

Softwood lumber has not been part of NAFTA but has been covered by separate deals, the last of which expired two years ago. The US imposed tariffs earlier this year.

TransCanada awaits Nebraska’s decision on Keystone XL
The long-awaited Keystone XL pipeline faces its final regulatory hurdle this week as Nebraska’s Public services Commission hearings consider whether to approve the route.

With President Trump overturning President Obama’s veto on the pipeline construction; and Montana and South Dakota giving their approval already; Nebraska could make or break the project.

Although the hearings begin this week, the state has until the fall to make a final decision.
