The new appointments include an internal promotion and a hire from outside
Empire Life has announced the addition of two new vice presidents to its executive pool.
Erik Kalin has been selected as vice president and chief operations officer for retail. In his new position, he will oversee the firm’s retail insurance and investments operations.
Prior to this appointment, Kalin was vice president of IT strategy and innovation, spearheading Empire Life’s digital strategy and lending his expertise and leadership to several online initiatives. His career prior to joining Empire Life includes stints at IBM, CIBC, Intria, and Bank of Montreal, from which he gleaned experience in banking, telecoms, and insurance.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Hede, FSA, FCIA, MAAA, is joining the firm as its vice president for risk management. Hede is an experienced actuarial and risk management executive. He most recently served as vice president of Nexus Risk Management for almost ten years, prior to which he was an actuary and associate vice president of quantitative risk management at Foresters. He is an expert at asset liability management, risk management, and valuation, among other subjects.
