It was only last week that one of the most recognizable and respected faces in Canadian TV stepped down from BNN Bloomberg. Now he’s launched a finance-focused YouTube channel with backing from Global X.

The Canadian ETF provider is the exclusive investment fund sponsor of ‘The Ticker Take with Jon Erlichman’ channel which will offer insightful financial commentary, news, and education; and there will also be a weekly market-focused video delivered through Global X channels.

Global X says that the partnership reflects the increase in the discount brokerage channel with DIY investors seeking insights and education online.

"This is a pivotal moment to bridge the gap between traditional financial institutions and retail investors, leveraging the power of social media to deliver real value, in a responsible manner, where it matters most," said Stephanie Wolfe, executive vice president, head of marketing at Global X. "Innovation is at the heart of what we do at Global X. This partnership is testament to that."

Younger investors are particularly keen to source information online through so called ‘finfluencers’ and while this can be a ‘wild west’ approach, prompting research and guidance from the CFA Institute earlier this year.

“Our research shows that finfluencer content often lacks sufficient disclosures, which can hinder the ability of consumers to evaluate the objectivity of the information, and some investors may be unaware when and how finfluencers are being paid to promote financial products," CFA Institute senior head of research, Rhodri Preece, said at the time.

By teaming up with a knowledgeable news anchor, Global X aims to both catch the wave of demand for online content and trusted information.

"There are three key investment channels in Canada: institutional, advisor and, increasingly, the DIY investor channel, which has seen considerable growth in invested assets, particularly with the use of Canadian-listed ETFs", said Rohit Mehta, president and CEO at Global X. "We remain committed to being a proud partner to all three. This partnership with Jon Erlichman is a recognition of the increasing importance and empowerment of DIY investors.”

Erlichman has been covering major business and investment stories for 25 years and has a significant following on social media with over one million followers across several platforms.

"I'm incredibly excited to be teaming up with Global X for this innovative partnership," said Jon. "I've been thrilled to engage new audiences across emerging social media platforms for years. It's now a dream come true to jump in with both feet to find new ways to help people learn more about the world of investing. YouTube is an ideal place to find and build a new community of DIY investors as passionate for these topics as I am."
