Markets positive on data, earnings
World markets are in positive territory so far Wednesday as data and earnings offset weaker oil and gold prices, and currency fluctuations.
Asian bourses closed mostly higher with Japanese trade and South Korean GDP data proving better-than-expected. The growth for Japan’s exports, the first in 15 months, saw a 1.4 per cent leap for the Nikkei. Regional corporate news and earnings also boosted markets.
European indexes are trending higher on corporate earnings with miners revealing better figures for the fourth quarter.
The Mexican peso is down against the dollar this morning as President Trump says he is planning to set out his policy on security including the highly contentious Mexican wall.
Wall Street and Toronto are expected to open higher. US crude inventories data is due.
Goldman Sachs pays Trump adviser $100 million
Gary Cohn, former second-in-command at Goldman Sachs has left the bank with a $100 million payout, CNN reports.
Cohn will lead Donald Trump’s National Economic Council and ethics rules mean he must end his association with Goldman Sachs after 25 years with the firm.
The huge payout reflects his long-term bonuses and stock options. The tax alone will amount to around $23 million.
