Police investigate as highly successful planner found dead
A financial planner and real estate developer from Sydney, NS has been identified as the victim of what is being treated as a homicide.
The Cape Breton Regional Police said that a man in his 50s was found dead in his apartment on August 29 and later confirmed that it was James David Matthews, co-founder of Matthews McDonough Financial Planning Inc. in Halifax.
Mr Matthews, known as Jim, founded the business with Justin McDonough who told CBC News: "I'm just grateful I had his influence in my life. He'll be sorely missed.”
Matthews was a high-profile businessman in the region and has been praised for his positive work in the community and for his kindness.
He served on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors from 1994 – 1999 and was previously with London Life Insurance Company after completing his BBA at St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia
It was at London Life where he met another business partner, John Tompkins.
“We’re still in a state of disbelief. It’s been a painful 48 hours,” Tompkins told the National Post.
Police say that the investigation into Matthews’ death is ongoing and are asking the public for information.
