For those who love a tipple or two, WPs asked renowned author and hospitality guru Billy Munnelly to opine on several bottles worthy as gifts this holiday season. If you’re unfamiliar with Munnelly his annual wine guide, Billy’s Best Bottles, was a Canadian best seller over the 22 years he produced it until throwing in the cork in 2012.
Since then Munnelly and his partner Kato Wake have been educating Canadians about wine through seminars, tastings and travel tours as well as writing a wine column for the Toronto Star. Extremely busy, the two spend most of their down time in Prince Edward County, one of Canada’s best wine regions.
Without further ado, here are some of Billy’s best for the season:
STAGS' LEAP THE LEAP ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2010 - 750ml $89.95 at LCBO Vintages
His take: ... classy Napa cab. At a recent tasting it blew away wines at twice the price.
MASI MAZZANO AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2007 - 750ml $101.95 at LCBO Vintages
His take: ... serious, soulful Amarone. Forget 'yummy', this is a classy wine for the connoisseur in your gang. Sure to be 'much appreciated'.
VEUVE CLICQUOT PONSARDIN VINTAGE BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE 2004 - 750ml $99.95 at LCBO Vintages
His take: ... toasty, mature Champagne for lovers. There’s a little extra thrill in this 10-year-old baby.
CHARTREUSE V.E.P. GREEN LIQUEUR - 750ml $89.95 LCBO Vintages
His take: ... one of the world’s great drink experiences. Chartreuse has a mystical quality putting it in a league of its own.
If wine and these other types of alcohol are in the gifting picture this holiday season, you can’t go wrong with any of his suggestions. Let’s just say Billy’s got a nose for this stuff. WP hopes to feature him on a semi-regular basis in the future.
In the meantime may the gift giving begin.
