Retail chain closes stores following security incident

London Drugs Ltd., a pharmacy chain, has kept many of its stores in western Canada closed following the discovery of a cybersecurity incident, as reported in an article by BNN Bloomberg.

According to a spokesperson from the firm, the pharmacy retailer had found a cyber issue within its operations and had closed all of its 79 stores as a precautionary measure. However, the firms’ pharmacists were still available to handle the requests of its customers and their possible urgent needs.

Despite previously advising its customers that their local stores may be contacted through their phone lines, London Drugs eventually announced that this was temporarily unavailable as the internal investigation regarding the cybersecurity issue has yet to be resolved.

The spokesperson further said that the pharmacy chain had no reason to believe that any data from their customers or employers were affected by the incident and assured that cybersecurity experts have already been hired in order to contain, remediate, and investigate the issue.

The pharmacy chain had first confirmed the closure of its stores on its official X account. A post shared to the company’s official Facebook account also reassured its customers that while it was unsure when it will go back to its usual operations, the closure of its stores was not permanent.

“We want to assure you that this incident is of the utmost priority for us,” the company said in a statement.

According to an article by CBC News, some of the firm’s staff in its Kamloops, British Columbia store said that it was experiencing a computer issue which prevented them from assisting customers who may be in need of something.

London Drugs is based in Richmond, British Columbia and was founded in 1945. In 1976, HY Louie CO.’s Tong Louie had bough the firm. Currently, Brandt Louie, Tong’s son is currently helming the business as one of the largest retailers in the region. The pharmacy chain currently has stores located across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
