Vancouver has more North American securities regulators than anywhere else – for this week at least.

The fall annual meeting of the North American Securities Administrators Association is taking place at the city’s Westin Bayshore Hotel with a theme of "Navigating Sea Change: Shifting Currents in the Investment Markets."

Attendees from Canadian and US regulators and financial services are hearing panel discussions on topics including an update on significant Canadian and US securities law developments that have taken place over the last year and how recent case law could affect how regulators pursue enforcement actions and craft regulations.

The use of online sources of investment information by retail investors will also be a key discussion, as panellists ask what securities regulators can do to stop the tide of misinformation and ensure investors have access to accurate information.

The agenda also includes a session on AI and its impact on the industry and the regulatory response required. Cutting-edge AI and machine learning technologies are transforming the investment markets and the retail investor experience.

Panellists will discuss what regulators can do to address emerging risks relating to conflicted or manipulative behavior. They will also consider other AI-related risks such as the rise of inadvertent meme stocks and hallucination events.

Sunday saw a session on tackling global enforcement at a local level. As global fraudsters increasingly exploit digital tools and online platforms, the panel explored innovative strategies to disrupt these schemes.

The event is hosted by the British Columbia Securities Association and it’s the first time the conference has been in Canada since 2000 when it was in Montreal.
