Multi-awarded phenom will help boost the beautiful game in Canada through Big Six bank’s national initiative
Canadian soccer sensation Alphonso Davies and BMO Financial Group, The Bank of Soccer announced a new partnership. Davies now plays for Bayern Munich and the Canadian Men's National Team.
One of the top full backs of his generation, Davies has already won several awards, including three consecutive Canadian men's player of the year titles (2018, 2020, 2021), the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season honor for 2019, and the Men's CONCACAF Player of the Year title for 2021.
"Alphonso Davies is a fantastic athlete and a barrier breaker. We're proud of his achievements on and off the pitch and are excited to work with him to grow the game, together," said Cameron Fowler, Chief Strategy and Operations Officer, BMO Financial Group. "When it comes to soccer, we invest early to help our partners create a tangible impact at the community level. We look forward to working with Alphonso to continue to grow the game in Canada and beyond."
"BMO IS soccer in Canada. Growing up you would see them everywhere and knew they supported the sport at all levels," Davies said. "From local soccer clubs to the BMO Whitecaps Academy to the three MLS clubs in Canada. I'm proud to be a BMO Soccer Ambassador and excited about our plans to grow the game in Canada and inspire the next generation of players."
Davies is a once-in-a-generation talent who is breaking barriers as a product of the Whitecaps BMO Academy system, a coast-to-coast network of Academy Centers that discovers young talent and offers a bridge to professional soccer pathways.
BMO will sponsor Davies' regional soccer clinics and his home-grown team, Born to Be, through the relationship.
The club's program is intended for enthusiastic, young soccer players who desire to advance physically, mentally, and technically to compete at the top level. The club is committed to enhancing the social well-being of Canadians by providing girls and boys who enjoy the global sport with career opportunities.
Davies is the first soccer player and Canadian to be appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR, a global organization whose mission is to save lives and improve the futures of refugees.
Davies is dedicated to social inclusion and believes that soccer can be used as a tool to improve lives and cultivate the next generation of leaders. This perfectly complements the bank's continuous commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity both on and off the field.
"Soccer represents a sense of belonging for everyone," Fowler said. "There is a shared passion amongst soccer fans and athletes which unites communities. BMO's work to grow the game across the grassroots and elite and professional levels supports that togetherness."
