Top hockey stars who’ve become financial advisors

This group of former athletes have made a successful transition from the rink to the boardroom. WP counts them down.

WP is counting down the list of the top 10 NHLers-turned-advisors with help from Business Insider its look at 33 former hockey players working in financial services. It’s a surprising common transition.

9. Brad Parsons
Played in the Washington Capitals system between 2002 and 2006, bouncing around various minor league teams. Now living in Dallas, the Massachusetts native plies his trade as a vice president with Goldman Sachs Investment Management advising high net worth clients.
 
8. David Emma
The Boston College graduate played a total 34 games in the NHL over nine seasons splitting time with the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, and Florida Panthers. Today, Emma is an advisor in Naples, Florida, in the Naples office of Hightower Advisors, one of the largest RIAs in the U.S.
 
7. Neil Eisenhut
In addition to stints with Vancouver, Calgary and Rangers, Eisenhut also spent six years playing professional hockey in Germany before returning to his hometown of Kelowna where he works for RBC Dominion Securities.
 
6. Paul Cavallini
The Toronto native put in 11 seasons in the NHL with a majority of his playing time spent in St. Louis with the Blues. Today, he’s a financial advisor in St. Louis with Morgan Stanley.
 
5. Brian Bellows
A highly skilled NHLer, Bellows was drafted second overall in the 1982 NHL draft. Playing in 1,118 games averaging a point a game, the former North Star works as an advisor with Piper Jaffrey in Minneapolis.

4. Barry Pederson
The Saskatchewan native put in a lot of years in the NHL retiring in 1992. Since then he’s worked for several investment firms in the Boston area. Currently, Pederson works with UBS Wealth Management.
 
3. Pat Hickey
The Brantford, Ontario had a long and successful career in both the NHL and WHA playing with the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and finishing up with the St. Louis Blues in 1985 after 12 seasons. Now, Hickey is an investment advisor with RBC Dominion Securities in Hamilton. 
 
2. Blake Dunlop
Originally from Hamilton, Dunlop played for four different NHL teams with most of the time spent with the St. Louis Blues. A branch manager in wealth management for 22 years, he now runs the flagship branch of Benjamin F. Edwards & Co.
 
1. Derek Sanderson
The former NHLer is equally well known for his pursuits off the ice as he was for his on ice prowess. Involved in the wealth management business for 24 years, Sanderson spends most of his time advising pro athletes how to manage their money, something he didn’t always do when he was playing.
