​TSX and loonie rise as unemployment drops to 6-year low

Canada’s jobless total has fallen to a six-year low and the number in employment increased for the second month in a row in October; marking a break in the up and down figures of recent months.

Canada’s jobless total has fallen to a six-year low and the number in employment increased for the second month in a row in October; marking a break in the up and down figures of recent months. The number of people in employment was up by 43,100; all in the 25-54 age range with women in this group gaining the most. Most sectors have seen increases except for public sector and natural resources where jobs have been lost. There are 26,000 new self-employed people.

The loonie has gained against the dollar and with positive share price increases for natural resources producers equities have been higher with the TSX closing up 127.45 points (0.88 per cent). US employment figures were also higher and the NYSE indexes were mostly higher. Oil is down slightly while gold is marginally higher.
