TSX starts with lows but ends flat

Tuesday started with losses for the Toronto Stock Exchange as mining stocks fell led by Teck Resources.

Tuesday started with losses for the Toronto Stock Exchange as mining stocks fell led by Teck Resources. Yesterday the firm was the subject of rumours of a merger with Chilean firm Antofagasta and its stocks gained but the subsequent denials by both firms put the stock in reverse. Later though better-than-expected GDP figures added some fuel to the market and the main index closed basically flat. Worldwide there was mixed sentiment in Asia as China increased its stimulus, although Shanghai closed lower. Europe also saw losses as economic data for the Eurozone disappointed. Wall Street saw some choppy trade with the Dow tumbling in the last hour of the day.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index closed down 5.95 (0.04 per cent)

The NYSE closed lower (Dow closed 200.2 points lower)

Oil is trending lower (Brent $55.21, WTI $47.55 at 4.25pm)

Gold is trending lower

The loonie is valued at U$0.7892 (at 4.25pm)
