He has led the firm’s success in global business, shareholder returns, and employee engagement
Sun Life Financial President and CEO Dean Connor has been awarded as Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year for 2017.
“I'd like to congratulate Dean and applaud the leadership he has provided to Sun Life,” said Bill Anderson, Chairman of the Board at Sun Life Financial. “Dean's passion and commitment to the company, its stakeholders and the communities in which we operate is apparent in everything he does.”
In presenting the honour to Connor, the award program’s advisory board noted the firm’s success on several fronts under his leadership. Globally, the company has grown at an accelerated pace in seven Asian markets, launched new wealth and asset management businesses, and made numerous acquisitions.
Over five years ending in 2016, Sun Life’s Total Shareholder Return averaged 28% annually, and achieved employee engagement levels that were above benchmarks for global financial services companies. More recently, Connor made digital innovation a priority to create better experiences for Sun Life Financial clients around the world.
“It's an honour to lead Sun Life and I share this award with our employees and advisors around the world who bring our purpose to life every day - to help our Clients achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives,” Connor said.
Aside from heading Sun Life, Connor is a member of the Board of Directors at the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA). He is also a member of the Business Council of Canada and the Ivey Business School Advisory Board, as well as a trustee for the University Health Network in Toronto.
