Apple unveils iPhone 16 with AI focus and new product lineup

Apple Inc. introduced its iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, designed to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) from the “ground up,” according to CEO Tim Cook.

According to a report by the Financial Post, the new models will come in different colours and feature a customizable Action button, previously only available on higher-end models, as well as a Camera Control button to enhance photo-taking capabilities.

The presentation, streamed from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, highlighted several other products. Apple introduced an updated version of its smartwatch, the Series 10, with 30 percent more screen area despite a thinner design.

The watch also includes the ability to detect sleep apnea, a feature available in more than 150 regions. The watch will be released on September 20, with prices starting at US$399 for the standard version and US$799 for the higher-end Ultra version.

In addition, Apple introduced new AirPods, featuring a smaller case and USB-C charging. A mid-range US$179 version with noise cancellation was also revealed, previously available only on the AirPods Pro.

The AirPods Max headphones, priced at US$549, will also debut in new colours and include USB-C charging. The new devices are set to launch on September 20.

AI was a central theme of the event, which began at 10 am local time. Apple highlighted its new AI tools, branded as Apple Intelligence, which includes an upgraded Siri digital assistant and custom emoji creation via text prompts.

However, much of the AI technology will be released in the coming months, limiting its immediate impact on iPhone sales.

The Series 10 watch, which is 10 percent thinner than the Series 9, comes in a new titanium model that is lighter than the aluminum versions.

Apple also updated its US$129 standard AirPods, shrinking the size of the case and adding USB-C charging, with a new US$179 mid-range option featuring noise cancellation.

The iPhone debut remains a crucial event for Apple, as the device generates roughly half of the company’s annual revenue.

By launching on a Monday, Apple sought to avoid clashing with major events scheduled for the following day, such as a US presidential debate and the European Commission’s ruling on whether Apple must pay US$14bn in taxes.

Although Apple is behind competitors like Alphabet’s Google and Microsoft in AI advancements, the company hopes to demonstrate that it is serious about AI.

However, some of Apple’s AI features, such as summarizing messages and notifications, are still in development and will not be available until next year.
