Asset manager appoints new CIO

In an effort to grow its business on a global basis one of Canada’s largest asset managers has hired a major player in the institutional arena

Sun Life Financial announced the appointment of Randolph (Randy) Brown as Chief Investment Officer overseeing the investment operations of Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada and its general account, which had invested assets of approximately $135 billion as at September 30, 2015.

"I am very pleased to welcome Randy to Sun Life and to the Sun Life Investment Management team," said Steve Peacher, President, Sun Life Investment Management. "He brings considerable global institutional investment expertise that will benefit our investment process. In his role, Randy will provide overall strategic direction for the investment of our general account assets and stewardship for our investment team. I expect that Randy's insights will also be invaluable as we expand our efforts in third-party asset management."

Brown brings to the table considerable institutional investment management experience including his most recent role with Deutsche Asset and Wealth Management as Global Head of Insurance and Pension Solutions and as Head of Asset and Wealth Management for the UK region.

Prior, he was Deutsche's Co-Chief Investment Officer responsible for a global investment staff of 750 and $1.2 trillion in assets, as well as the head of Deutsche Insurance Asset Management, managing money for insurance companies with over $200 billion of assets under management. His previous experience also included serving as BlackRock's Co-Head of Portfolio Management of its Financial Institutions Group, where he managed $120 billion in fixed income assets for a client base of more than 100 insurance companies and banks.

Brown will assume the Chief Investment Officer responsibilities from Peacher, who previously held dual accountabilities and will now continue to focus on his role as President, Sun Life Investment Management.
