Enbridge releases 2023 sustainability report highlighting progress

Enbridge Inc. (Enbridge or the Company) has released its 2023 Sustainability Report today.  

The report outlines the company's sustainability strategy and approach, highlighting progress in meeting its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. 

Key goals for Enbridge include reaching net-zero operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, leading the industry in safety performance, and enhancing the diversity of its Board of Directors and workforce. 

The 2023 Sustainability Report includes the following highlights: 

Environment 

  • Emissions: Enbridge achieved a 37 percent reduction in GHG emissions intensity and a 20 percent reduction in absolute GHG emissions from the 2018 baseline. Methane emissions from the company's natural gas operations saw a 40 percent reduction from the same baseline.  

The company has also expanded and enhanced the transparency of its Scope 3 emissions reporting and updated its business analysis under different climate-related scenarios in line with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations. 

Social 

  • Safety: The company surpassed its safety improvement target, achieving a 16 percent reduction in work-related injuries and safety incidents among employees and contractors, compared to the goal of a 10 percent improvement over the past three-year average. 

  • Indigenous Relations: Enbridge advanced Indigenous reconciliation, meeting 10 of the 22 goals from its Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan, reached $2bn in Indigenous procurement and labour spending, and committed to an additional $1bn by 2030. 

  • Workforce Representation: There was an increase in the representation of underrepresented ethnic and racial groups, US veterans, women, Indigenous peoples, and persons with disabilities. 

Governance 

  • Diversity & Inclusion: The diversity goals for Enbridge's Board of Directors were surpassed, achieving 50 percent representation from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and 50 percent representation from women. 

The development of Enbridge's 2023 Sustainability Report was in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Universal Standards and GRI 11 Oil and Gas Sector Standard.  

The sustainability data disclosed uses the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) standards for Oil and Gas Midstream, and Gas Utilities and Distributors. The 2023 ESG Datasheet also includes the company’s response to the TCFD recommendations.

We also detail our actions to provide reliable, affordable energy sustainably to as many people as possible and address both past and present challenges, looking forward to future opportunities."
