Manulife appoints new president and CEO as current leader announces retirement

Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC) has announced that its president and chief executive officer, Roy Gori, will retire on May 8, 2025, with Phil Witherington confirmed as his successor.

Witherington will join the Board of Directors upon assuming the role. According to its press release to ensure a smooth transition, Gori will serve as an Advisor until August 31, 2025.

Don Lindsay, chair of the Board, expressed confidence in Witherington’s appointment, citing his track record as chief financial officer and president and CEO of Manulife Asia.

Witherington, who joined Manulife in 2014, has been a member of the Executive Leadership Team since 2017. His experience includes five years as chief financial officer before taking on his current role.

He brings over 25 years of expertise in insurance and financial services, having held leadership roles at HSBC, AIA, and KPMG in London and Hong Kong.

“It is an honour to be provided with the opportunity to lead the next chapter for Manulife,” Witherington said. He emphasised the company’s global capabilities and history, expressing excitement about continuing its growth trajectory.

Lindsay noted Witherington’s ability to manage complexity, deliver results, and lead with authenticity.

The Board also recognised Gori’s transformative leadership during his tenure. Lindsay praised Gori for building a strong culture and achieving significant milestones that positioned Manulife for sustainable growth.

Reflecting on his time at Manulife, Gori stated, “It has been my honour to serve as Manulife's president and CEO, and I'm extremely proud of our team's many accomplishments. We've delivered superior operating results, de-risked our business, and become a digital customer leader in our industry.”

He credited the company’s global team for these achievements and expressed optimism for its future under Witherington’s leadership.

As the transition progresses, Witherington will remain in his current role while working closely with Gori. He is expected to name his successor in the coming months.
